Ahead of World International Polio Day, which is slated for 24th October, the Kaduna State Polio Survivors Association has organized one day novelty para soccer match With various groups of poliomyelitis victims in the state with the aim of raising more awareness to the general public
The state chairman of the association Comrade Rilwanu Abdullahi said, they organize para soccer game to educate the general public on the importance of giving their children for vaccines to save them against the virus.
According to him, the association is in forefront towards taking the campaigns to rural and urban areas in the state.
He said, they have contributed immensely towards drawing the attention of the public to be giving their children for immunization against the polio virus, which is a life-threatening disease caused by the virus.
The chairman noted that polio has in the past caused many problems for many children by crippling them.
Rilwanu who is equally the national president of Beyond the border of disability in Nigeria, emphasized that contrary to popular belief, polio does not always cause paralysis.
"Some people with the poliovirus don’t have any symptoms. However, in severe cases, the virus can cause nerve injury. When there is a nerve injury, it can lead to paralysis and even death".
He called on traditional titled holders and religious leader to support the campaign in the Fight against poliomyelitis across the country.
It must be recalled that in 1988, the World Health Assembly adopted a resolution to eradicate polio around the world. Under this resolution, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was launched. The World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and the CDC spearheaded the initiative.
