It was a delightful day for the children rights advocates in Kaduna state after a milestone judgement in their favour against a herbalist who poisoned young boy in Kaduna.
Yusha’u Abubakar, ED of @eCAPH2 and a pioneer fellow of the Gidan Yanci Fellowship Programme was first narrates the story to www.newspanorama.com.ng, he begin from the scratch and said: "it was a bright and sunny day on the 20th of April, 2023, when I received an emergency call from Rabi Salisu, Senior Special Adviser to the Governor of Kaduna State, informing me about a case of a minor who had been poisoned by a herbalist".
Yusha’u explained further, "the incident was reported to her by Yusuf Ibrahim Zailani, the speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly. My heart sank as I heard this news. I knew that I had to act fast to save the life of the poor child".
Without wasting any time, "I rushed to the scene of the incident with Rabi Salisu. On reaching there, we found the boy lying unconscious on the hospital bed. It was clear that the situation was grave. We immediately reported the matter to the police".
However, to note was that, the healthcare providers at the hospital did everything to ensure the boy's life was safe. Hence it was a race against time, but eventually the child pulled through.
"The speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Yusuf Ibrahim Zailani, and Hajiya Rabi jointly committed to taking responsibility for all costs of the medication. This act of kindness was heartwarming".
"It was a long and arduous journey, but justice has finally been served. Today, June 8, 2023, the perpetrator, the herbalist who poisoned the boy, was punished by paying compensation of N200,000 (two hundred thousand nairas) to the family of the victim".
While monetary compensation could never make up for the trauma and emotional distress that the boy and his family had gone through, it was a necessary step toward closure.
Reflecting on the incident, The e-caph boss said, he is proud to have played a part in helping this innocent child. "I am grateful to Rabi Salisu and Yusuf Ibrahim Zailani for their assistance and generosity in ensuring that justice was done".
The incident serves as a reminder that we must always be vigilant and proactive in protecting the vulnerable and holding those who harm them accountable.
