The Controller General of Corrections, CGC. Haliru Nababa says capacity building and welfare of Correctional Service Personnel will continue to be his cardinal agenda in taking the service to a greater height.
Haliru Nababa stated this during the Passing out Parade of the 237th Basic Recruit Course Participants at the Correctional Service Training School, Kaduna.
The CGC who was also the reviewing officer represented by the Deputy Controller General, DCG. Tukur Mohammed in charge of training and staff development explained that the service is in partnership with relevant agencies like the Nigerian Army Special Forces Training Center in the area of training and re-training for improved operational capacity of officers and men.
The Controller General identified Armed Forces Command and Staff College Jaji, National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, kuru Jos, as well as the National Institute for Security Studies, Abuja, and the National Defense Academy, NDA Kaduna among others as some of the relevant Security Agencies that the Service is in partnership with.
Haliru Nababa said he would continue to consolidate on the achievements of the past administration especially in the areas of inmate management and infrastructure development for enhanced Service Delivery.
He said the service under the current administration had zero tolerance for indiscipline and unprofessional conduct, hence the need for them to adhere strictly to the mandate of the service as enshrined in the 2019 Correctional Service Act.
"This is just one of the training you are expected to undergo as you progress in your chosen career as correctional officers and men. This course is meant to address the fundamental rudiments of correctional practices with your entrance from the correctional Assistant Inspectorate Cadre needs to know,"
"As Assistant Officers Course, the duties of these trainees range from Custodial and non-custodial services, and from non-skilled based to other rudiment work, from the beautiful parade reviewed this morning, I'm quite sure the above skills have been fully inculcated into you", explained the CG.
According to Haliru Nababa, one of the core mandates of the Nigerian Correctional Service is to promote Internal Security through reformation rehabilitation and re-integration of reformed inmates back into society for growth and development.
Haliru Nababa pointed out that, as one of the crucial parts of the Administration of the Criminal Justice System, the officers and men have proven themselves worthy by rendering critical and professional Services in promoting National Security.
The CGC congratulated the graduates and urged them to make judicious use of the knowledge and skills acquired noting that, maintenance of National Security is essentially one of the numerous tasks they are expected to maintain as they progress in the service.
He expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu and Minister of Interior Mr. Olubunmi Tunji Ojo for their support in driving the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019 despite the prevailing challenges facing the Country.
The high point of the passing out Parade was the award of excellence to distinguished graduands on drill, leadership, academics, and behavior.
