A Non-Governmental Organisation known as Northern Nigeria Bridge Builders (NNBB) has described recent calls for the removal of the current military Service Chiefs as untimely. The group suggests these calls might be politically motivated to derail the progress being made to stem the tide of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of criminality wreaking havoc in different parts of the country.
The NNBB made this assertion at a news conference addressed by its Lead Convener, Comrade Goodheart Sheyin, and held at the NUJ Secretariat in Kaduna.
According to the group, the Service Chiefs, along with the apex men and women of the Police and other paramilitary agencies, are 'square pegs in square holes.' They possess a maturity balanced with youthful energy, serving the nation with uncommon loyalty to the hierarchy, and their efforts are yielding fruitful results across various theaters of military and security operations.
Therefore, the group deplores such calls for their removal as untimely and not the best way forward. Instead, the NNBB advocates for the continuous provision of all necessary moral and logistical support for the military and security hierarchy. This support, they argue, will enable them to successfully defeat the evils of banditry, kidnappings, terrorism, and all forms of criminality across the nooks and crannies of the country.
Comrade Goodheart Sheyin also stated that the group initially convened the news conference to counter calls for the removal of the Service Chiefs, which he noted first emanated from the convener of a different group, the Northern Ethnic National Forum, identified as Dominic Alancha. Mr. Alancha had advocated for a change in the top military hierarchy on the grounds of professional incompetence.
The NNBB further pointed out that while the said individual is entitled to his opinion, such calls are not a true reflection of the sentiments of the people in the Northern region, particularly in states and communities ravaged over time by terrorist attacks, banditry, and kidnappings, or other parts of the country.
