Aware that there is no effective vaccine against hepatitis C, a nongovernmental organization, Women Models and Mentor Foundation has stressed the need to be proactive against the menace of the disease.
The President of the organization, Hajiya Bilkisu Abba Ibrahim, in a remark in an address marking World Hepatitis Day with the theme, One Life, One Liver in Kaduna.
She said every year a lot of people living with the viral virus are unaware need to be tested while those infected with the disease require life-saving treatment.
“Then people living with hepatitis can’t wait for a life-saving treatment and expectant mothers also can’t wait because of their babies, so they can’t wait to get tested too and get screened for treatment”.
“According to her, statistics have shown that over one million hepatitis-related diseases occur every year, and one new chronic infection every second while a lot of people don’t know the danger of hepatitis disease which is the worst thing that has engulfed the world”.
“Globally, an estimated 58 million people have chronic hepatitis C virus infection, with about 1.5 million new infections occurring per year. There are an estimated 3.2 million adolescents and children with chronic hepatitis C infection”, Hajiya Bilkisu noted.
Hajiya Bilkisu Abba Ibrahim urged the people to take every opportunity to get tested while calling decision decision-makers to eliminate hepatitis from society.
The UN hepatitis Day is celebrated every year on 28 July 2023 bringing the world under one theme to raise awareness of the global burden of viral hepatitis and to influence real change.
