Exploring all diplomatic fronts to manage and de-escalate the ECOWAS and Niger Coupists stand-off remains the best option to war.
This is made known in an interview by the former Chairman of Container Truck Drivers Association, Salisu Adamu Abubakar while reacting to the senate’s refusal to authorize military intervention in the Niger Republic.
Salisu Adamu said several states in the northern part of the country share a border with Niger Republic and any act of aggression would subject Nigerians in those states to soft targets.
He appealed that sustained diplomatic efforts should continue between the ECOWAS and the military leaders to find a lasting solution to the crisis.
“I have to sincerely thank President Bola Tinubu for sending a delegation led by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, including the Sultan of Sokoto, Mr. President should know that Nigeria and the Niger Republic are seen as one”.
“Nigeriens and some people in Nigeria share cultural similarities, and marital relationships, hence we need to trade with caution and strengthen diplomatic efforts”.
The former chairman lauded the position taken by the red chamber for declining to issue authorization to the presidency to take military action against the Coupists, urging them to remain resolute on the position.
He however, described as unfortunate, the position of the military juntas in Mali and Burkina Faso for declaring to fight alongside the military in Niger, saying it negates the spirit of the African brotherliness.
Meanwhile, the Chairman Container Trucks drivers, lamented over multiple extortions from the security operatives on the roads, citing unlawful and professional conduct from the officers
“I want to appeal to authority concern to look into the attitude of security operatives deployed on our roads (Road Blocks) over the extortions from drivers which was becoming unbearable”.
