In a recent stakeholders' reflection meeting held at Asaa Pyramid Hotel in Kaduna, the Commissioner for Education, Professor Sani Bello, revealed the state government's initiative to gradually recruit ten thousand teachers through the State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB). The decision comes as part of the ongoing efforts to enhance the education sector in the state.
The announcement, conveyed by the ministry's Director of Planning, Alhaji Salisu Baba Lawal, unfolded during discussions on findings and lessons learned from the study, "on the implementation of the teacher's recruitment, deployment, and retention policy in Kaduna state." This comprehensive research, funded by education research initiatives in conflict and crisis-affected settings, was conducted in November 2023 and led by the International Rescue Mission with support from the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office.
Professor Sani Bello emphasized collaborative measures between the Kaduna state government and the federal government to ensure security personnel presence in schools located in conflict and crisis areas. Furthermore, he outlined plans for teacher and student training on early warning signs of insecurity, highlighting the partnership with the United Nations UNICEF in this endeavor.
Alhaji Shehu Sani Usman, Permanent Member of Kaduna State Teachers Service Board (TSB), shed light on the successful implementation of the recruitment policy, citing the recruitment of 7600 teachers in the previous year.
Comrade Ibrahim Dalhatu, Kaduna State Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, expressed the importance of the gathering in assessing the effectiveness of TSB and SUBEB policies. He underlined the need for constructive criticism and recommendations for policy improvements.
Senior Education Specialist at Oxford Policy Management, Mrs. Joy Oballum, described the reflections meeting as crucial for supporting the educational system and government in enhancing processes for children in conflict settings. The research aims to learn from ongoing policy implementations, identify challenges, and propose effective revisions for the betterment of education in the state and the country at large.
