The All Progressives Congress (APC), Plateau State Chapter, has expressed grave concern over the imminent closure of Plateau State University Bokkos by the National Universities Commission (NUC) due to violations of the commission's guidelines by the state government.
According to information received by the party, the NUC is on the verge of withdrawing the certificate of recognition and accreditation granted to the institution. This drastic action stems from the Plateau State government's interference in academic activities and management affairs at the university.
The APC views the recent actions of Governor Caleb Mutfwang, including the removal of the Vice-Chancellor and the retrenchment of qualified lecturers, as primary factors contributing to the potential closure of the university by the NUC.
Expressing deep concern, the APC highlights the disruptive consequences of such closure on the state, parents, and students. Despite protests from academic and non-academic staff, as well as warnings from the NUC regarding violations of the university's laws, the governor's unilateral decisions persist.
The party notes that Governor Mutfwang's actions mirror those of his predecessor, Jonah Jang, who similarly faced repercussions from the NUC. The APC underscores the urgency for the governor to reinstate the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Matur, and the retrenched lecturers and support staff to avert the looming axe of the NUC.
The APC emphasizes the necessity for immediate action to salvage the university's accreditation and ensure the continuity of academic pursuits for students. Failure to address these issues promptly could have detrimental effects on the educational landscape of Plateau State.
