The Northern States Governors’ Forum held its first meeting for 2024 on Tuesday, April 30, at the Council Chamber, Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna. Led by Chairman and Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, the forum commended the Federal Government’s efforts in combating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities.
The governors expressed sympathy and support for states facing security challenges, including Kaduna, Katsina, Niger, Plateau, and Zamfara. They committed to investing in education, skill development, healthcare, and social services to address the region’s challenges, including the high number of out-of-school children.
The forum discussed the New Nigeria Development Company’s role in revitalizing the regional economy and resolved to invest in critical infrastructure to unlock the North’s industrial and economic potential. They also acknowledged climate change, unsustainable agricultural practices, and population growth as significant challenges, and pledged to adopt a holistic approach to environmental conservation and sustainable resource management.
Presentations were received from the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) and World Bank Team, as well as the Coalition of Northern Group on security in Northern Nigeria. The forum commended the Arewa Consultative Forum’s efforts to harmonize activities and voices representing the region.
The governors commended their chairman for his leadership and engagement with stakeholders to ensure sustainable peace and stability in the North. The host governor, Kaduna State’s Senator Uba Sani, was also commended for his efforts in hosting the meeting.
The forum’s resolutions and commitments aim to address the region’s pressing challenges and promote progress and prosperity in the North.
