The highest decision body of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has taken decisive action against some of its erring members, stripping its former President, Dr. Honour Sirawoo of his position as Board of Trustees chairman and approved the expansion of the Board from three to seven members.
This decision was made at the recent Full Council meeting, where several other key decisions were taken to address the ongoing crisis in the association.
The Full Council meeting condemned the needless crisis orchestrated by some members of the National Executive Committee (NEC), which has brought public embarrassment to the association and dented its corporate image.
As a result, three elected NEC members - Bonny Nyong, Azuka Chiemeka, and Ijeoma Peter-Nwante - were suspended indefinitely, while three appointees - Frankie Omonkhua, Olalekan Ige, and Mansur Mohammed - were relieved of their appointments.
The council also commended Chief Donatus Agu-Ejidike, Nigeria's Pillar of Sports, for his continued support to SWAN activities and sports development. However, it condemned the shady handling of ID card registration and implementation in the past and called for better ways of handling annual registration and membership renewal.
Also, the council also resolved that the tenure of the current SWAN statute is due for review and set up a committee to undertake this task at the next Full Council meeting.
Furthermore, the council declared it a criminal offense for anyone or group outside the Isaiah Benjamin-led NEC to use SWAN for personal or unofficial communication.
These decisions mark a significant turning point in the association's efforts to address its internal crisis and restore its reputation as a leading sports organization in Nigeria.
