Abuja, May 10, 2025 — The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering support for grassroots sports development, stating that the President’s commitment is already delivering tangible results across the country.
Speaking on recent achievements, Olopade highlighted the introduction of the Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) as a milestone in Nigeria’s sports evolution.
For the first time, these junior athletes are participating as the symbolic “38th state” at the ongoing National Sports Festival in Ogun State—an initiative designed to unearth young talents for future international success.
“Grassroots development is central to the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy,” Olopade said. “President Tinubu has made it clear that sports must be developed from the base, and we are seeing that vision unfold.”
He credited the federal government’s robust financial support for enabling 19 national teams to participate in international tournaments, many returning with medals and records that have elevated Nigeria’s global sports reputation.
Recent international triumphs include Nigeria’s U19 Cricket team finishing 5th at the World Cup in Malaysia, a historic gold medal by swimmer Abdul Tabur Adama at the Africa Junior Championships in Egypt, and major wins in para-badminton, wrestling, and weightlifting.
Olopade, a two-time Ogun State Sports Commissioner, emphasized that these successes are a direct result of President Tinubu’s strategic investment in sports as a tool for national development under the Renewed Hope Mandate.
