The Kaduna State Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the state government, demanding full implementation of the ₦72,000 national minimum wage for primary school teachers under the Local Government Education Authority.
The ultimatum, effective from October 2, 2025, warns of imminent strike action if the issue remains unresolved.
In a joint statement signed by State Chairman Comrade Ibrahim Dalhatu and State Secretary Comrade Adamu Ayuba Kaltungo, the Union expressed deep disappointment and warned that failure to act within the stipulated period would leave them with no choice but to initiate strike action.
This development follows a series of negotiations and assurances dating back to December 2, 2024, when the Kaduna State Government formally agreed with Organized Labour to implement the new national minimum wage, effective November 2024. The agreement covered all employees across Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and the 23 Local Government Areas, including primary school teachers.
However, while the wage adjustment has been partially implemented, teachers in the local government service have yet to receive the new salary scale.
The government cited the need to verify its workforce as a prerequisite for full implementation—a process that has since been completed, albeit with challenges.
Tensions escalated in July 2025 when the NUT Chairman publicly hinted at a possible strike. In response, a high-level meeting was convened on September 18, 2025, involving the Union, the Special Adviser on Labour Matters, Comrade Adamu Samaila, and the Nigeria Labour Congress Kaduna Chairperson, Comrade Ayuba Magaji Suleiman.
Both officials assured the Union that the wage adjustments would be reflected in September salaries.
Yet, when salaries were disbursed, the promised adjustments were absent, prompting the Union’s latest ultimatum.
