Kaduna – Kaduna State is hosting the 47th National Council on Agriculture and Food Security, calling for unified action to transform the sector and achieve national food security.
The event, which opened at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Hall, will run until Friday. Governor Uba Sani is expected to formally declare the summit open on Thursday.
In his opening remarks, the State Commissioner of Agriculture, Malam Murtala Dabo, welcomed delegates from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. He described the council as a crucial platform for shaping Nigeria's agricultural future.
Dabo recalled that the state had successfully bid to host the event at the previous council meeting in Calabar. He expressed satisfaction that the state was now fulfilling that promise.
The Commissioner positioned Kaduna as a key partner in the agricultural landscape, highlighting its production of maize in Giwa, ginger in Kachia, and soybean in Soba as evidence of its significant role in the sector.
Aligning with national policy, Dabo praised the agricultural focus of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda. He also credited Governor Uba Sani's state-level leadership for reimagining agriculture as a driver of "opportunity, peace, and prosperity."
He urged delegates to approach the week's deliberations with a spirit of collaboration, stating that the future of Nigerian agriculture depends on both strong policies and a "unity of purpose."
The council is expected to produce key recommendations for the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, focusing on strategies to boost production and ensure food security across the nation.
