The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FRCN Kaduna Chapel, Comrade Umar Adamu Sarkinfada, has described bad journalism practice as a major threat to professionalism, public trust, and national stability.
In a New Year message to journalists, Sarkinfada warned that the spread of fake news, poor investigation, and the activities of quack journalists are damaging the image of the media profession and undermining the efforts of trained practitioners.
He noted that unverified and sensational reports, particularly on sensitive issues, could fuel panic, misinformation, and social tension, while the actions of unprofessional individuals often cast a shadow over credible journalists.
The NUJ chairman called on journalists to recommit themselves to the ethics of the profession, emphasizing accuracy, balance, fact-checking, and thorough investigation in line with NUJ policy and the code of ethics.
He urged media organizations to strengthen internal regulation and continuous training, while appealing to the public to rely on credible news sources and verify information before sharing.
Sarkinfada reaffirmed the commitment of the NUJ FRCN Kaduna Chapel to upholding professionalism and media integrity, describing the new year as a turning point for responsible journalism in Nigeria.
