Former Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing the need for strategic political realignment amid the evolving national landscape.
In a press statement dated March 29, 2026, Kwankwaso announced that his resignation takes immediate effect, bringing an end to his role as National Leader of the party and its presidential candidate in the 2023 Nigerian general elections.
The former governor of Kano State described the decision as difficult, noting that he remained a committed and bona fide member throughout his time in the party. However, he explained that the current direction of national politics necessitated identifying with another platform capable of delivering meaningful change.
Kwankwaso expressed appreciation to the NNPP leadership, particularly the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, and members of the National Working Committee for their support during his tenure. He also acknowledged the contributions of the party’s Board of Trustees, National Executive Committee, and grassroots leaders from ward to state levels.
The former presidential candidate further thanked supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement for their dedication, emphasizing that collaboration among stakeholders would continue in pursuit of a more prosperous future for Nigeria.
Kwankwaso however, assured supporters that efforts toward national development would persist despite his departure from the NNPP.
