NUT President, A Tireless Champion of Teachers' Rights and Quality Education Development in Nigeria

It is an understatement to say that the National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Audu Titus Amba, is a dedicated and visionary leader who has devoted his life to championing the rights and welfare of teachers in Nigeria.

Indeed, as the number one teacher in the country, Amba has been a force to be reckoned with, consistently pushing for improved working conditions, better salaries, and professional growth opportunities for teachers across the country.

Comrade Amba has been at the forefront of key advocacies that have benefited teachers and the education sector. These include ensuring primary school teachers' salaries are deducted at first-line charge to guarantee regular payment, reviewing the policy on payment of teachers' salaries to Local Government Councils and transferring responsibility to State Governments, and pushing for increased budgetary allocations to education to meet international benchmarks of 6 percent of GDP and 20 percent of the national budget.

He has also driven the implementation of the Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachers Act, enhancing job security for teachers.

 

Under Comrade Amba's leadership, the NUT has undergone significant transformations. He has overseen staff restructuring at the National Secretariat in Abuja and inspected state offices, ensuring the union is more effective and responsive to members' needs.

He has equally championed the full implementation of the five-year elongation of years of service for teachers nationwide, boosting staff morale. Promotions within the union are now based on merit and proven track records.

Comrade Amba also spearheaded the total overhaul of the NUT National Secretariat in Abuja, creating a more conducive working environment for staff and providing new official vehicles for operational efficiency.

Known for his prompt response to issues affecting teachers, he regularly visits states to address concerns and ensure that teachers' voices are heard.

His rise through the ranks reflects decades of dedicated service. He served as Branch Secretary of NUT Kaduna South Local Government in 2000, later becoming Branch Chairman, Chairman of the Kaduna State Joint Council, Kaduna State Chairman of NUT, National Publicity Secretary, and now National President. He also serves as Vice President of Education International and Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress.

Under his leadership, the union has recognized excellence in education, including honouring Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State as Nigeria's Most Teacher-Friendly Governor.

Comrade Amba has consistently advocated improved teacher welfare, emphasizing the need for a special salary structure, a 40 percent peculiar allowance, timely payment of salaries, and full implementation of approved welfare packages to attract and retain qualified teachers.

He has repeatedly warned that persistent insecurity in schools could force teachers to withdraw their services if adequate measures are not taken to guarantee their safety.

The NUT President has also called for the immediate payment of minimum wage arrears, condemned salary delays, and urged both Federal and State Governments to improve funding for education, noting that many teachers still work in overcrowded, dilapidated, and poorly equipped schools.

He has further advocated that only qualified professional educationists should head education institutions and agencies, while stressing the importance of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) in maintaining professional standards.

Comrade Amba believes that teachers deserve decent remuneration and professional recognition because they face the same economic realities as other Nigerians. He maintains that improving teachers' welfare remains essential to achieving quality education and sustainable national development.
