The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has re-elected its incumbent President, Comrade Audu Titus Amba, for a second four-year term during its 8th Quadrennial National Conference held at the International Conference Centre, Enugu.
The conference drew over 5,000 delegates and education administrators from across the country under the theme: "The Deployment of Technology and Artificial Intelligence in Education: Will it Erode the Place of Teachers in the Classroom – A Myth or Reality?"
Dignitaries from within and outside Nigeria attended the event, including a high-powered delegation from Kaduna State led by Comrade Jerry Adams, the governorship running mate to the state governor for the 2027 election.
In his acceptance speech, Amba described his renewed mandate as a call to greater responsibility. He outlined improved teacher welfare, professionalism, and quality education as key priorities for his new tenure.
The re-elected president further assured teachers of his commitment to improving their welfare and protecting their dignity, stressing that no teacher should be made to feel undervalued or disrespected while discharging such a critical national service. He noted that a motivated and dignified teaching workforce remains the foundation of any meaningful educational reform.
He also thanked teachers nationwide for their confidence in him and assured them of a transparent and open-door leadership approach.
Amba stated that the union would work closely with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and other labour bodies to secure a new living minimum wage for workers, adding that the welfare of teachers would remain central to the union's engagement with government at all levels.
He further called on the Federal Government to urgently address insecurity around schools and ensure the safety of learners and teachers to guarantee educational emancipation. According to him, no meaningful learning can take place in an environment where both teachers and students live in constant fear for their lives.
The NUT National President Comrade Audu Titus Amba noted that while teachers are willing to adapt to current realities in the profession, governments at all levels must also live up to their responsibility of meeting the needs of teachers.
In his remarks, Kaduna State Governor Senator Uba Sani, represented by his running mate in the 2027 election, described the leadership of NUT President Comrade Audu Amba as people-driven, adding that it is making the state proud in the global community and commended the NUT President's prudent and dynamic leadership style.
He thanked Nigerian teachers for their confidence in the "illustrious son of Kaduna State," expressing optimism about his credibility and ability to move the union to the next level.
In separate remarks, the Governors of Enugu State, Mr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, and Kebbi State, Dr. Nasir Idris, described teachers as central to the development of any society and called for more attention to address their plights.
Education Minister Urges Teachers to Embrace Digital Technology
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has challenged teachers across the country to adopt digital technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve their profession.
The Minister, represented by the Registrar of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Dr. Ronke Soyombo, made the call while declaring open the 59th Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Conference of Delegates held in Enugu State.
Dr. Alausa said adopting these new skills aligns with the ongoing transformation in the education sector by the Federal Government.
He urged teachers to see technology not as a threat to their relevance but as a tool to enhance their effectiveness in the classroom, adding that the future of teaching belongs to those who embrace innovation.
