In a bid to fasttrack tennis development in Kaduna state, a one day Tennis clinic for young players was held in Kaduna State.
The clinic was organised by Kaduna State Tennis Association, aimed to identify talents.
Speaking with newsmen at the NNPC Tennis Court, the state sports Commissioner Prof Gugong said, he was there to support and encourage the Young lads.
He also charged them to to work hard, “by working hard the sky will be their limit.
“My message to these young lads is to continue to work hard because with hard work the sky will be their limit, I can see they are doing very well and with what we have seen today, we are confident that those going to Delta for the National Youth Games would do well”.
Also, speaking on the sideline of the clinic, Joel Adi explained that the clinic is to provide locals with the platform to showcase their talents.
“We organised this clinic because for a long time there was no clinic in Kaduna to build on the successes of tennis games, particularly we are trying to make the locals embrace the game of tennis in Kaduna State”.
“This is also to build on the achievements recorded in the last festival where tennis players from Kaduna won two silver and a bronze”.
Assuring that the two players in camp ahead of the National Youth Games, (NYG) have the qualities to bring medals for the Kaduna State Contingent, Mr Joel said.
“They are practicing very well in the camp and am assuring you they will bring medals”.
Earlier, addressing the players, the Director of Sports Development, Yakubu Ibrahim said tennis players would be among the 242 athletes and players, 53 Coaches/Officials to represent Kaduna State during the National Youth Games slated for Delta State next month.
“We are going with 242 athletes/players across 28-30 different Sports, 53 Coaches 14 umpires; apart from accompanying officials; and in total we are going with 394 contingents from Kaduna State”.
On the expectation, Yakubu Ibrahim said the commissioner has tasked the contingent to improve on the performance level for better placement on the medal table.
As I said when the new commissioner saw that we finished 12th on the table, he was not actually happy but he was happy too and tasked us not to exceed 5th position, we have a technical unit that constantly visits training venues to ensure good preparations”.
The one day clinic was presided over by a US-based coach, Ubale Muhammed who took them through the tennis basics.
Coach Ubale explained that the clinic is an opportunity to introduce the game, develop and propagate it among children at grassroots levels.
No fewer than 80 children have participated in the clinic.
