Kaduna State Government says prevention of violence against women and girls in the state remains top on its priority list, as the 2023 sixteen-day activism for the elimination of violence against women and girls is ongoing.
The Commissioner of the Ministry of Human Services and Social Development, Dr. Rabi Salisu stated this during community engagement at the Women Skills Acquisition Center, Rigasa, Igabi local government area of the state.
Represented the Director of Youth Development in the ministry, Hajiya Maryam Muazu, Dr. Rabi Salisu explained that violence against women and girls, as well as children, is on the increase in society, hence the need for the sixteen days of activism to eliminate it.
She expressed sadness that cases of child rape were alarming and assured that the ministry with the support of its partners would do everything possible to put an end to such incidences.
She applauded the support of the United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, Civil Society Organizations, CSOs, traditional rulers, youths, and all relevant stakeholders for investing in preventing violence against women and girls.
According to her, Governor Uba Sani-led government would continue to do its best to "Orange" the state with peace and love in line with this year's theme: invest to prevent violence against women and girls.
Dr. Rabi Salisu maintained that the Rigasa community was chosen for community engagement as it has the highest recorded violence against women and girls incidences in the state.
On her part, Chief Executive Officer of the Center of Study and Resolution for Domestic Violence, Professor Hauwa'u Evelyn Yusuf explained that the center which is in collaboration with the ministry to put an end to gender-based violence in the state, would continue to do it best in line with the global mandate of "oranging the world" with peace and love.
She called on all and sundry to support the Ministry of Human Services and Social Development in achieving it.
Also speaking, the Center Manager of Salama Saka Center, Yusuf Danfodio Memorial Hospital, Tudun Wada Kaduna, Barrister Sidikat Bello Adegboye explained that violence against women and girls is becoming rampant as well as that of the boy child.
She called on parents to focus on bringing up their children, saying the care of their children should not be compromised based on seeking economic livelihoods, instead, they should devise ways to balance it.
On their part, Sarkin Gabas Tundun Wada, Alhaji Gambo Ibrahim, Mai-Ugwan, Mallam Bashir Hassan, Arewa Youth Consultative for. Chairman, Kaduna state chapter, Comrade Sagir Umar, and Duty Solicitor PWAN, Barrister Muhammad Bashir Ibrahim all rally support for the 2023 sixteen days of activism for the elimination of violence against women and girls theme.
The community engagement program featured presentations and question-and-answer sessions.
