The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has taken action against several companies in Kaduna for violating environmental laws. Following a series of inspection and compliance visits, the agency identified multiple infractions, including failure to adhere to recommendations aimed at improving and protecting the environment.
The state coordinator, Aminu Danmasani, disclosed this in an interview after a press briefing, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to ensuring a safe and healthy environment for all residents.
Mr. Danmasani explained that NESREA had issued prior warnings and provided detailed guidelines for the companies to comply with environmental standards. However, many failed to implement the necessary measures to mitigate environmental hazards.
“Our role is not to stifle businesses but to ensure that economic activities are carried out responsibly without jeopardizing public health and the environment,” he stated.
The sealed companies were found to be discharging untreated waste, engaging in improper waste management, and emitting pollutants far above permissible levels. These activities, NESREA revealed, pose significant risks to both the environment and public health.
The agency’s inspections revealed that some companies ignored recommendations to install pollution control systems and adopt sustainable practices.
In response to these violations, NESREA sealed the premises of the defaulting companies and warned that legal action would follow if compliance was not achieved. The agency also reiterated its readiness to collaborate with compliant businesses to achieve sustainable environmental practices. “We are not against industrial growth, but it must not come at the expense of the environment,” Danmasani added.
Residents of Kaduna have lauded NESREA’s actions, noting that industrial pollution has been a persistent issue in the state. Many expressed hope that this enforcement would serve as a deterrent to other companies, encouraging adherence to environmental laws. NESREA assured the public that it remains committed to its mandate of safeguarding the environment and will continue its enforcement activities across the state.
