In a bid to support local farmers and enhance food security, the Executive Chairman of Jos North Local Government Council, Barr. John Kyohroh Christopher, has officially launched the sales and distribution of subsidized fertilizers for the 2025 rainy season.
The distribution process, which aims to ensure fertilizers reach genuine farmers at affordable rates, is structured to prevent hoarding and resale. According to the council, designated distribution centers have been set up across Jos North to facilitate smooth access for farmers. Each farmer is required to register with the local agricultural office and present valid identification to verify eligibility for subsidized purchases.
Speaking at a symbolic presentation attended by farmers, agricultural stakeholders, government officials, and traditional leaders, Barr. Christopher emphasized the importance of ensuring the fertilizers reach genuine farmers rather than middlemen. He assured that the council would monitor the distribution closely to prevent misuse.
“With the distribution of these fertilizers, we are taking a decisive step to ensure that they are accessible to farmers at a subsidized rate. This initiative is designed to prevent resale and guarantee that those working in the fields benefit directly,” Christopher stated.
He expressed gratitude to Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, for his unwavering support, revealing that ten trailers of fertilizers had been allocated to Jos North Local Government Area this season.
“We appreciate His Excellency, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, for prioritizing farming and providing this crucial support. His commitment to revitalizing the Agricultural Services Training Centre (ASTC) has ensured that fertilizers and other farm implements are readily available for farmers,” he added.
The District Head of Tudun Wada, Peter Nyam, representing the Ada Gwom Jos Izere Chiefdom, commended the initiative, describing it as a well-organized and timely intervention. He noted that many farmers had already begun collecting their allocations, expressing confidence in the transparency of the process.
Meanwhile, Council Secretary Hon. Pharm. Gyang Ishaya Samuel cautioned against the illegal resale of fertilizers, urging agricultural stakeholders to ensure that the intended beneficiaries receive their share. He stressed that effective distribution would contribute to poverty alleviation and help farmers maximize their yields.
Distribution is expected to continue throughout the season, with officials stationed at various centers to oversee the process and provide assistance where needed.
Goodwill messages were delivered by AFEAN Chair Hon. Paul Balles, His Royal Majesty Ujah Anaguta (represented by the District Head of Targon, Aminu Maisamari Dogo), and PDP Jos North Chairman Hon. Elijah Itsegok.
As the farming season progresses, stakeholders remain hopeful that this intervention will boost agricultural productivity and contribute to sustainable food production in the region.
