Kaduna, Nigeria – As Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day on June 12, Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has called on citizens to reflect on the sacrifices of democracy heroes and renew their commitment to upholding democratic ideals.
In a message to the people of Kaduna, Governor Sani paid tribute to the pro-democracy activists and citizens who fought for the entrenchment of constitutional democracy in Nigeria.
He stressed the significance of June 12 in national history, noting that the landmark 1993 election—widely considered the country's freest and fairest—was a defining moment of unity and collective resolve.
"The annulment of that historic election was a dark chapter, yet it became a catalyst that strengthened our democratic resolve," the governor stated. "Today, we celebrate the progress we have made while acknowledging the challenges we still face."
Governor Sani reassured Kaduna residents of his administration’s unwavering dedication to democracy, transparency, and accountability.
He outlined efforts to bridge the gap between rural and urban communities and expand access to economic opportunities, education, and healthcare.
While acknowledging ongoing economic and security challenges, the governor expressed optimism that Kaduna and Nigeria would overcome them through unity and resilience.
The governor urged citizens to remain engaged in the democratic process and continue striving for a just and prosperous society.
"Democracy is not a destination but a continuous journey. Let us draw inspiration from the sacrifices of our heroes and work together to build a better future for Kaduna State and Nigeria," he concluded.
Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 in honor of Chief MKO Abiola and other democracy icons who championed Nigeria’s democratic transition.
Kaduna joins the nation in celebrating the resilience of the Nigerian people and their commitment to democratic governance.
