Kaduna Deputy Governor Leads 2025 World Teachers’ Day Celebration, NUT Chairman Calls for Greater Investment in Education

The Kaduna State Deputy Governor, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, on Sunday led the state’s commemoration of the 2025 World Teachers’ Day, standing in for Governor Senator Dr. Uba Sani at a vibrant ceremony held at the NUT Teachers’ House, Kabala Costain, Kaduna. The event brought together educators, government officials, and stakeholders to honor the contributions of teachers and advocate for stronger support for public education.

In her address, Dr. Balarabe reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of teachers and enhancing the quality of education across the state. 

She highlighted recent reforms including the extension of teachers’ service years, the provision of CNG buses for free transportation, and the launch of the KADSUBEB Best Teacher Award. “Teachers are the backbone of our society. Their dedication shapes the future of our children and our state,” she said.

Also speaking at the event, Comrade Ibrahim Dalhatu, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kaduna State Wing, praised the state government’s efforts but urged for more decisive action. 

He emphasized the importance of the day’s theme, “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession,” and called on all levels of government to invest more in teachers’ professional development and welfare.

Dalhatu commended the administration for inclusive policies and infrastructure development but expressed concern over the delayed implementation of the National Minimum Wage for teachers in the Basic Education Sector. He revealed that the Union had issued a 21-day ultimatum to the government to address the issue and avoid potential industrial action.

The NUT Chairman also joined the global campaign to “Go Public: Fund Education,” advocating for increased public investment in education and regulation of private sector involvement. “When teachers are valued, the nation prospers. When teachers are neglected, the society suffers,” Dalhatu declared.

The ceremony featured the presentation of awards to outstanding teachers, with 23 educators recognized under the 2025 KADSUBEB Best Teacher Award. Winners received ₦500,000 cash prizes and scholarships for further studies, courtesy of the Kaduna State Scholarship and Loan Board.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment from stakeholders to support teachers and strengthen the education sector in Kaduna State and beyond.
