The President of the United Church of Christ in Nigeria populaly known as HEKAN Rev. (Dr.) Amos G. Kiri, has called on Nigerians, particularly Christians, to remain vigilant, security-conscious and modest in their celebrations as they mark the 2025 Christmas season.
In his Christmas message delivered on Thursday December 25, Rev. Kiri reminded believers that Christmas goes beyond festivities, describing it as a season that reflects God’s faithfulness, love and redemptive plan for humanity through Jesus Christ, “the Lord our Righteous Saviour,” as declared in Jeremiah 23:6.
He noted that while Christmas is widely celebrated by both Christians and non-Christians across the globe, its true essence lies in the rescue mission of Christ, who came to illuminate a dark world and bring peace and salvation to humanity.
“As we celebrate Christmas, we must remember that Christ’s rescue mission is ongoing and has been entrusted to all who believe in Him,” the HEKAN President said, urging Christians to proclaim peace and salvation through their conduct and witness.
Rev. Kiri expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in the country, citing the rise in banditry and terrorist attacks on communities, schools and places of worship.
He advised Nigerians to be alert and proactive during the festive period, drawing lessons from the shepherds at the birth of Christ who remained watchful over their flock.
He encouraged communities to organise local security measures to ensure safety throughout the Christmas celebrations and beyond.
On the economic challenges facing the country, the cleric called for moderation and prudence, noting that rising costs of essential commodities have placed immense pressure on ordinary Nigerians, especially those in rural areas.
He urged Christians to embrace godliness with contentment, referencing 1 Timothy 6:6, and warned against excessive spending during the festive season.
Rev. Kiri also challenged the Federal and State Governments to live up to their constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property. According to him, a secure nation is the foundation for prosperity and national development.
He called for increased deployment of personnel, intelligence and resources to security-challenged areas, as well as proper equipping of security operatives to confront threats effectively.
“The impunity with which enemies of the state operate leaves many Nigerians scared and uncertain,” he said.
Addressing Christians directly, Rev. Kiri reminded them that persecution remains part of the Christian calling, noting that even Christ was targeted for elimination at infancy. He urged believers to remain steadfast, faithful and prepared, drawing strength from Christ’s example and sacrifice.
The HEKAN President described Christmas as a season of hope, peace, salvation and light shining in darkness, calling on Christians to proclaim Christ in all their activities during the season and beyond.
