The Gbagyi Development Union (GDU), Kaduna State Chapter, has warned politicians against taking the support of the Gbagyi people for granted, declaring that the community will no longer vote for leaders who fail to deliver development, inclusion and effective representation.
The union said ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Gbagyi people have resolved to adopt a more issue-based and development-driven approach to politics, insisting that support for candidates and political parties would depend on their commitment to addressing the needs of the community.
In a statement signed by its President, Comrade Samson Maikano, the GDU lamented what it described as years of marginalisation, inadequate representation and neglect of many Gbagyi communities despite their contributions to the growth and development of Kaduna State.
The union noted that several Gbagyi communities continue to grapple with poor road networks, inadequate healthcare facilities, limited educational opportunities and insufficient government presence, while the people remain underrepresented in key political and administrative positions.
According to Maikano, the Gbagyi nation has remained committed to democratic participation and has consistently supported governments at various levels, but many of its communities have yet to experience the level of development and inclusion expected in a democratic society.
He said the time had come for politicians seeking the votes of the Gbagyi people to move beyond campaign promises and demonstrate genuine commitment to improving the lives of the people.
“Whenever communities are ignored in government policies, excluded from critical appointments, denied essential infrastructure or remembered only during election campaigns, such actions send a clear message about their place in the priorities of those in authority,” he said.
Maikano stressed that the 2027 elections would provide an opportunity for the Gbagyi people to support leaders based on competence, integrity, accountability and their track record in delivering tangible results.
“The era of empty promises is over. Our votes must count for development, inclusion and good governance. We can no longer support leaders who remember us only when they need our votes and abandon us afterwards,” he added.
The union urged political parties and aspirants seeking elective offices to engage meaningfully with Gbagyi communities and address longstanding concerns over representation, infrastructure and socio-economic development.
It also called on members of the community to remain united and politically conscious, urging them to participate actively in the democratic process and make informed choices at the ballot box.
The GDU maintained that sustainable development can only be achieved when leaders are held accountable and all segments of society are given a sense of belonging in governance.
Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and advancement of the Gbagyi people, the union said it would continue to advocate policies and programmes that promote equity, justice, inclusion and balanced development across Kaduna State.
“The message is simple: respect our people, include us in governance, invest in our communities and fulfil your promises. Anything short of that should not attract our support in 2027,” the statement added.
