Community-driven development has been identified as a key component of sustainable development across communities.
This was highlighted by the General Manager, Kaduna State Community, and Social Development Agency, (KADCSDA), Engineer Muhammad Shuaibu Abdullahi while declaring open a one-day engagement training and stakeholders engagement held at Rimi College, Kaduna.
He said for community projects sustainability, communities must be involved in the projects processes and their executions to fast-track community ownership.
“The essence of this engagement is to enable you to understand the processes and procedures of community-driven development”.
“And having said that, the facilitators will take you through how to prepare a community development plan and to adequately address the issue of sustainability”.
The General Manager reminded the stakeholders that any project that has no sustainability plan, most times is a result of a lack of ownership by communities where the project or projects are sited.
So, we have to ensure that our communities take over government projects and see them as theirs, hence underscores the importance of involving the communities at the planning to execution stage of every project to facilitate the community ownership of such project “.
Engineer Muhammad explained that the training and engagement are concurrent, happening in the state’s other zones.
“We decided to take all the 23 LGAs in the three zones so that it would be easier to control and manage the crowd for the understanding of the basic principles that we need them to understand for the community engagement processes”.
Giving an overview of the KADCSDA, Abubakar Yusuf Maman, the Manager, Head of Operations of the Agency, described Community Driven Development (CDD) as an approach to development that supports participatory decision making, local capacity building, and community control of resources.

“CDD empowers communities to identify, prioritize micro-projects in the community development plan (CDPs), implement, utilize and maintain the projects to ensure ownership and sustainability”.
“At present, we are running a community workshop to sensitize our community members on the importance of KADCSDA and the areas of Intervention”.
“Presently, we are running a two-year program, Kaduna State Action Recovery And Economic Stimulus -KAD-CARES, where we intervene in four thematic areas, that’s education, health, water, and sanitation as well as nutrition “.
“We have invited Directors of Administration and Finance (DAFs) of the local governments, Community Development Officers, (CDOs) who go to the communities to sensitize so that we come together to see how we can intervene in those four areas at the community levels”.
Abubakar Yusuf said the KADCSDA had been mandated to reduce poverty to the barest minimum and improve socio-economic infrastructure, among others
